John Nettles Retires From MidsomerJohn Nettles is retiring from ITV crime drama Midsomer Murders after 12 years and 65 episodes playing Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby. The 65-year-old will leave the show at the end of next year, however, his last appearance as Barnaby will be broadcast in 2011. The show is commissioned until 2012 at least, and it is not yet known if Barnaby will be killed off. Former Bergerac star Nettles said: "It's the end of an era for me. "And while I'm very sad to be handing in Barnaby's badge, he has solved nearly 200 murders, which I think meets the target of modern policing." ITV drama commissioning director Laura Mackie, meanwhile, told Broadcast magazine: "He will be missed by us all... but we hope to work with John on other projects for the channel." Waveguide, 12/02/09.

Midsomer is one of my favourite series. I am really sorry to read this. John Nettles is excellent in the role.

I think he is very good too. I haven't watched Midsomer Murders recently - I always seems to be on with at least 2 other things. It won't be the same without John Nettles though.

Well thank goodness we still have 2 years of Midsommer left. (How many more deaths? ) I love this series & all the characters, Esp Troy LOL. Cully ? Strange name. My old vicar called his daughter Buffy, strange but I am sure it was short for something biblical. My Lilly_bet, is named after the queen BTW, officiallt Elizabeth
